We have entered that time of year when predicting the weather is challenging for even professionals.  I once heard a weatherman share that after looking at 98 different weather models 52% said the system would provide 2 inches or more of snow.  Friday morning, I woke up, looked out my window and asked myself why school was canceled. As I fixed breakfast, 30 minutes later, I understood why school was canceled as I watched the precipitation drip off the ice cycles and how those same ice cycles grew longer and longer.

In the school office, we are constantly tracking enrollment numbers for this time of year.  Every time a re-enrollment pops up in our inbox there a small jump for joy. Mrs. Martens is always looking forward to providing tours for potential students.  Planning for the upcoming year has already begun.

There are so many questions and unknowns in life.  One thing, we can be confident in, is the love God has for us.  The Psalmist tells us in chapter 139:13-14 “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.  Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.” Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”  There are many more verses that remind us daily that God is in control. What a comforting thought, knowing that in all circumstances God is in control. Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances: for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

I don’t know about you, but I’m afraid to blink.  I’m afraid that if I do it will be March 1st. Saturday was February 1st and it’s already been a whirlwind of excitement and activities.  Sunday was an amazing day for Kansas City and the Chiefs. This amazement has continued into the week, because students can wear blue jeans and Chiefs/Red all week.  Wednesday is the Super Bowl parade and rally scheduled with a threat of snow in the forecast (I feel like we should expect a threat of snow every day this month). Thursday, Friday, and Saturday is the Lutheran Athletic League of Kansas City 7th and 8th Grade Basketball Tournament hosted by us. We have the joy of 6 different schools visiting MLA over the weekend.  We have a wonderful community at MLA and want to share that hospitality with all who attend. We need everyone’s help to make this happen, please sign up to help at bit.ly/78BBALL2020.  Your generosity is what helps to make MLA wonderful.

February 14th is Valentine’s Day and the following week is Kindergarten Round on February 20.  Invite your family, neighbors, and friends to attend. That week is also the deadline for auction tickets and auction items for catalog entry.  The 17th Annual Fundraiser Auction is only about 2 weeks away at that point. This is a wonderful event filled with many wonderful items for your bidding. Dinner will also be delicious.  The earnings from the auction go towards the operation budget (which helps keep tuition cost down) and a portion will go towards a designated need. Thankfully, there’s an extra day in February because we need it.

1 Peter 5:6-7 says ‘Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.”  Even in a month, where if you blink you miss it, we know we have a community that cares. Most importantly, we have a Lord that cares deeply for every single person.

It was great to see everyone’s bright and shining faces on Monday as we returned to school.  I am really looking forward to the second half of the school year. As normal, there is never a dull moment.

Wednesday, re-enrollment for the 2020-21 school year will begin.  Families should receive an email from TADS concerning re-enrollment.  As in years past, there is a $150 enrollment fee per student due prior to February 15th.   After February 15th the fee increases to $200. Tuition for the 2020 school year is remaining the same.  Kindergarten tuition will remain $4,700 and 1st through 8th $5,300. We are looking forward to continued growth at MLA.

Martin Luther Academy’s student growth cannot be done without you.  Parents are our best marketing tool. You sharing, inviting and bringing friends and neighbors to MLA speaks volumes. Please go online to both our Facebook page and Google to write a review. It would be an amazing witness to MLA’s qualities.  I encourage everyone to find different ways to share about MLA.

One of the areas that we have been exploring lately is through our alumni.  Over the past seven years, MLA graduates have been successful at whatever high school they have attended.  Our students have attended 13 different high schools in the area. Some have gone on to graduate as National Merit Finalists, participated in the Baccalaureate program, and National Honor Society leadership and many more honors. They have participated in athletics, drama, band, music and other extracurriculars.  They have graduated high school and moved on to attend universities across the state and nation. As I examine this information, it reassures me that MLA is laying the foundation for a strong spiritual, emotional, and academic foundation.
